Auto Insurance Policy Limits Search

Liability limits on a driver's or vehicle owner's personal auto policy, searched by name, plate, VIN or policy details.

What the search covers

For crashes involving a private driver or vehicle owner, we look for the liability policy limits on the auto insurance policy that may apply to the defendant. A search is built around the at-fault driver or the vehicle owner, using whatever identifies them: a name, a plate, a VIN, a policy number or a carrier name. If you know the defendant but not the carrier, send what you have and we will tell you whether we can search from it and how certain the result is likely to be.

What we need from you

  • The defendant's full name and the date of loss
  • The accident location
  • A plate, VIN, policy number or carrier name, if you have one
  • The accident report; it usually fills in the rest
  • Your firm name and a case reference, so the report and invoice match your file

What the report shows

The report lists the policies we located for the defendant and the policy limit shown for each, along with the carrier and any policy details we could identify. It notes anything we could not confirm and, where useful, suggests next steps. It is delivered by email.

Date of loss and vehicle coverage: what a search does not confirm

A policy limits search is research. It does not confirm that a policy was in force on the date of loss, that a particular vehicle was covered under it, or that no other coverage exists. Those points are confirmed through the carrier, a declarations page, a formal disclosure request or discovery. We do not provide declarations pages or certified policies.

Pre-suit requests to the carrier

Some states let a claimant request liability limits from the insurer before suit. If yours does, send that request alongside a search: the carrier's written answer is the one you can rely on in a demand or in court. Our guides explain how to find the at-fault driver's policy limits, how pre-suit disclosure differs by state, and how North Carolina's statute works.

Pricing and turnaround

Pricing is quoted before work begins. Turnaround depends on the information you send; if time is tight, ask for rush handling. See Pricing.

Frequently asked questions

What can I search by?

A defendant's name, a vehicle plate, a VIN, a policy number or carrier name, or a combination. The more identifiers you send, the more specific the result.

Will the report prove coverage on the date of loss?

No. A search reports the limits we find. It does not confirm that a policy was active on the date of loss or that a particular vehicle was insured under it. Those points are confirmed through the carrier, a declarations page, a formal disclosure request or discovery.

Have a defendant and a date of loss?

Send us the case details and we will confirm what we need to start. Questions first? Email [email protected].
